ABILITIES
( SWORDSMANSHIP / SUPPORT TALENTS ) Now, while Sorey proves to be quite aware when it comes to handling a sword- his style isn't exactly something commonly known. To put simply is Sorey has his own style when it comes to his swordsmanship. People he come across with, knights and mercenary, acknowledge that he is very handy with a sword. However, they also recognize that it is not common swordsmanship that he fights with. Nothing like being taught by other knights or by being a part of mercenary guild. Sorey is, more or less, self-taught! Learned through the acts of fighting prickleboars. It was an everyday fight of survival for the prickleboars, and it was food for Sorey. Otherwise, the following support talents he can learn are: snack preparation, item ordering, treasure detection and point of interest detection. And here is a list of his artes. ( RESONANCE )
Growing up in a village full of seraphim, Sorey is different from the common human. The reason for that is his resonance. By now, normally humans are gone without their resonance, a sorta spiritual like energy that allows them to perceive seraphim. Growing up among them allows him to have a strong resonance so he's able to communicate and interact with every seraph he comes across. This also allows him to see Hellions and anything else ( other non-human things for example) not normally seen by the human eye. Though Hedalf does prove it once in the game that the Lord of Calamity was able to block his resonance for a short period of time. At least until Sorey grew strong enough through the game to forbid that from ever happening again. ( SHEPHERD )
Ever since becoming the Shepherd through contracting with Lailah by taking up the Sacred Blade, Sorey has more powers to his name. To start off, as the Shepherd he has the ability to purify malevolence at its roots, and is, by extension, able to purify the hellions. By becoming the Shepherd he becomes the vessel for all seraphim he is contracted to during his time, allowing them to be able to reside inside him in a spiritual-like orb. They're hidden from his view but he can still hear them talk in his head. Talk about a crowd. While he's able to take on more seraphim, he is also able to make contracts to take on Squire beneath him. They are basically disciples that, if they have a lot of resonance, can purify malevolence and even take on more of the Shepherd's ability without any cost to him. Through Alisha we see that humans with no resonance actually weaken his state- causing him to go blind in one eye at one point because he was basically lending some of his own power by extension to her so she was able to fight at his side. With the Seraphim part of the pact he's able to wield their power of armatization with them as well. This allows him to change form and use the element of the Seraphim he is currently in armatus with.

Upon meeting Sorey, there's a bright sorta friendliness about him. He was raised under the strict watchful eye of his caretaker, Gramps, and thus brought up to have quite the manners. He's polite- and the way he speaks, even giving short bows usually in meeting, goes to reflect that. He won't turn down invitations and will show respect even to those that may be potential threats to his being. It shows just the kinda young, respectable and very impressionable man Sorey is. Of course he may have forgotten how to introduce himself to the first human he meets- but details, details! Despite polite and respectable, the matter of roles and status ranks depends on who. Not that if he isn't respectable to those clearly higher in status or deserving of respect- but for the case where it concerns him, such as being the Shepherd, Sorey would rather see himself on equal grounds and level with everyone else. He has no ounce of narcissism concerning himself like that. (Of course he may joke about it, but he never believes in it.) Even when seen as a respectable figure through the priests, such as Priest Bruto, he still goes as far as to sit down on his knees to put every heart into requesting the priest's help. He doesn't take advantage of his newly rank and status- even turning down any offers to buy his image.
Though that brings up his upbringing. Because Sorey was raised in the seclusion from humans in a village full of only seraphim, Sorey is quite blind when it comes to the human world. At least of the works. It isn't to say that he's stupid- but more booksmart with a clear lack of streetsmart. To put simply: Sorey is naive and every bit of innocent at the beginning of his journey. His travels change that to enlighten him of the actual current happenings of the world and the state it is in. He may even seem ignorant too, appearing too overly trusting and clueless when it comes to plenty of things. After all this is a boy who is willing and readily to make friends with an Assassin and her group simply by the single thought that she had saved him. So clearly she must not be bad, right? The seraphim of course see Sorey's trusting personality to be a clear goodness and a fault, but what obviously makes Sorey- well, Sorey. Even with the possibility of the food he was eating upon invitation to possibly be poisoned, he still ate it out of courtesy and politeness. Also probably to show he won't be frightened or intimidated. Naive and possibly a bit too foolish for his own good. Another show of his trusting attitude is when he meets Alisha, he brings her to his village even at the time not knowing who she is or even her name. Simply because Sorey is a good-hearted person, not wanting to abandon a helpless person in the middle of nowhere. And though his intentions were every bit of good, he went against the orders of his caretaker to never bring a human to their village. However, he's not completely naive. At least in Marlind when he comes across a woman traveling with antique books who had claimed she was putting them in safekeeping. When he comes across to find out her true intentions, he claims, "So you really weren't protecting the books, huh?" Though he wanted to believe she was doing as she says, it suggests Sorey had a feeling that it was just too suspicious that just maybe something else might be going on instead. Though he wants to believe the better side of people; Sorey comes aware just how malevolence has come to taint the world through his travels. But more often than not Sorey can't wrap his mind around why some people do the things they do- the way they behave and act, unable to understand the cruel and ugliness of the world sometimes, to which his friends must explain why things are done the way they are. For example soldiers doing what they do upon the battlefield and outside, unable to understand how they can behave so cruelly and be eager to fight in war against others.
Now, just because Sorey is naive, it doesn't mean he's not smart- he's actually highly intelligent. As mentioned, more book-smart than he is street-smart. Growing up with ruins close to his village, Sorey has grown a large fondness for ruin explorations and structures. Putting simply, he's quite the history fanatic. Because of his time spent in ruins growing up, he's got quite the knack for solving puzzles. Even going as far as to be self-taught on how to read the ancient tongue- learning how to read untranslated monoliths spread across his travels. He thinks very much outside of the box- and by taking the time to study a ruin's outline and layout, he's usually able to solve openings and even more complex puzzles shown throughout even in completing his trials. Of course there's the added competitiveness with the addition of Mikleo, given the two usually make it a game to see who can solve a puzzle first. His clear observant eye is key to recognizing and even memorizing sights and structures- proving that he's more or less even gone as far as to memorize the Celestial Record. Which he's proven by repeating a few lines from the books here and there. His memory is very much sharp- repeating something the Priest in Pendragon had said only once and yet having memorized the whole part expressed about the Shepherd from back in that shrine. He even can recognize discovery points throughout his travels, remembering them from the Celestial Record and remembering the exact context and text describing said discovery. His fondness and excitement expressed by the Record comes by again and again- always taking the opportunity to geek out with Mikleo, easily excited at the sight and being able to explore ruins even across the world.
Sorey always being a key to detail. Through his love and fondness for the tales of the Celestial Record, Sorey proves his passion and devotion to his interests. Even while traveling on an important mission, he's able to keep his interests and love for such things close to heart. To be fair, he'll even goes as far to take things during their enjoyment straight into nerd talk- proven in the sauna skit, instead of simply enjoying the hot springs, he proceeds to dive right into the history of hot springs and where they came from and so forth. Sometimes there's just no end to his geekiness. Of course he's also interested in all of the world as well. Having grown up in a secluded village most of his life, could he really be blamed for all his excitable reactions?
It's no exaggeration to say that Sorey is every bit pure and good-hearted. With his upbringing alongside Seraphim, his fellow companions comment continuously on Sorey's apparent too goody pureness. Zaveid countlessly trying to drag him into babe-hunting and checking out ladies, which always gains an innocent comment or clueless Sorey. Simply being the kind of person not one for checking out girls, as Mikleo comments that it's "useless" when it comes down to it (with Sorey + girls). However, Lailah also comments that the fact that Sorey is so pure makes him the perfect Shepherd candidate. After all, it is a Shepherd being pure and with pure intentions that keep himself clean as a vessel and keeps himself and the Seraphim contracted with him free of malevolence. The purity of his soul and character is what keeps him safe from ever being twisted and tainted. Even though he faces countless struggles, plenty of moments that could twist and corrupt any other person- Sorey fights through and proves himself above it all for the sake of his friends and dreams. It's also the thought at the very end that proves how pure Sorey's character is- instead of just destroying and getting rid of the Big Bad, Sorey's decision instead is to savehim. After learning about Hedalf's past, he grows sympathy for him, not that he can forgive his actions and what he's done- but he feels Hedalf deserves to be saved from it all. Wanting not just to defeat him simply to end it all- he wants to do more than that, he wants to free Hedalf from this pain once and for all. Because in the end Sorey is the kind of person who wants to save. It pains him to bring unnecessary violence and harm upon anyone. Though at the very end he mercy kills not only Gramps but Hedalf as well, to save them from anymore harm. Even though throughout his travels Sorey had countless struggles bringing himself to even kill someone. He first and foremost wants to find a way to help someone without killing them. Promised with Eizen, hesitating when it came to Cardinal and even Mayvin. In the end Sorey learns that killing them can also be a way of saving them- or rather, the only way to save them. He still takes no pleasure in any of it but if he has no other choice, at the end Sorey will do what is necessary as seen through his growth throughout the game.
However, important to note is how reckless Sorey can actually be. He isn't at all a "think before you leap" kinda person. Not just reckless, but impulsive on that account, always doing things instinctively in reaction. He does what he believes is right, but that doesn't mean he always thinks things through. Upon wanting to rebuild the bridge he almost recklessly armatizes right then and there to repair it. Which would be bad to do it in front of so many people- at least Lailah worried about Sorey's state of mind if he chose to take that path, after all the fear of the unknown is great in the human world. If not for his friends, Sorey would be putting himself in situations like that all on his own. His emotions are what run him in times like this rather than serious thinking things through. Mostly just wanting to help people even if he accidentally comes across as monster to them. He's been proven to be easily provoked too at the start, added with his reckless need, is bad on most accounts. Hedalf being able to rile up reactions from the Shepherd upon their first and second encounters. The way he thinks is always the "in the moment" sorta ideal, never realistically over what could happen via consequences or results. Which brought not only him in danger but Rose as well in his encounter with Hedalf with Rose alongside him. It definitely doesn't help that Sorey is very much stubborn to the fault as well. In the first place he refused to let Mikleo become his Sub Lord, on the account that he didn't want Mikleo being dragged or put into harm's way. His stubbornness also shows when he'd rather take things on alone without the cost of anyone else. Mikleo certainly comments time and time again about Sorey's stubborn act as well.
Sorey is a hero. As Rose puts it, it's her job to kill people- and it's Sorey's to give life. The reasons he acts and does what he does is by putting everyone's safety in mind and heart. Though his impulsiveness and stubbornness tend to fault him to the point of being inconsiderate not only to his friend's safety, but his own especially. Even if never his intentions to put his friends into harm's way- it's Sorey's thinking that he wants to protect them that harm himself the most in the end. In a way, you can say he's pretty self destructive. When he comes into contract with Alisha, because her power is so weak in comparison he has to lend her some of his own, which results to him going blind in one eye. Instead of alerting or letting anyone else know, he keeps it to himself. He deals with going half blind by burdening himself and shouldering everything on his own. Mikleo even makes note for his friends to keep an eye on Sorey as he tends to "take on more than he can carry." Sorey even tries to self inflict harm on himself during the Fire Trial to prove himself, not even giving a second thought to consider hurting any of his friends. Which causes Lailah to take on the scorching herself while also reminding Sorey that he has friends here, that he has people he can rely on. Though he gets the idea with Mikleo, throughout his travels he shows to still burden himself as seen with Alisha's contract and the Fire Trial. Even at the very end where he sacrifices himself to sleep for possibly eternity for the sake of purifying Maotelus and leaving behind his human life. His thoughts are he's gonna purify the world that way the responsibility doesn't have to fall onto someone else- being the first Shepherd to actually try and put an official end to this cycle of malevolence.
